Ivan Savvidi is re-elected president of the Association of Greek public associations of Russia (AGOOR)

It has been unanimously decided at the Russian national convention AGOOR which took place on 21st of June.

The latest convention of Russian Greeks was marked by high attention both of political and church leaders. With their welcome speech President of Greece Prokopis Pavlopulos, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill, Archbishop of Greece Hieronymus and many other political, church and public people addressed the meeting.

During his report about the results of AGOOR’s activities for the last four years Ivan Savvidi also mentioned some results of participation of Greek delegation in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) and emphasized an outstanding role of Greek Diaspora in strengthening of Russian-Greek relations.

“For historical reasons, in spite of some periods of estrangement between Russia and Greece, our countries have too many common cultural and spiritual traditions to exist separately. That is why the process of political rapprochement which we can see today cannot but make us glad and proud, given that this newly established Russian-Greek dialogue is our merit too- merit of social organizations and concerned citizens, who facilitate these positive changes.

I call this foreign policy resource - “public diplomacy” and advocate for it to be a part of governmental policy- unofficial people have to be involved in rapprochement of Russia with countries which have geopolitical importance for our country”, - he said.

Participants of the convention determined major future areas of activity of the organization: preservation of historical memory, revival of cultural values, development of national education and cultural and educational activities, promotion of system of social support and help, integration into the worldwide Hellenic movement and growth of AGOOR’s influence in the international field and outlined plan of activities in the frameworks of Russian-Greek bilateral year.
