Ivan Savvidi visited Mount Athos
Mr. Savvidi was invited by the hegumen of the St. Panteleimon Monastery and took part in celebrations of 1,000 years of the Russian monastic presence in Mount Athos.
St. Panteleimon Monastery was founded in XI century. By the end of XIX century the monastery became the biggest in Mount Athos and came under the control of Russian Orthodox Church. Nowadays the St. Panteleimon Monastery is under the jurisdiction of the Constantinople Patriarchate. Russian monks live in the monastery.
Sacred Mount Athos is called « Russian Vatican» for its religious significance for Russian Orthodoxy. There are more than 20 monasteries, where 1500 monks live today.
